Porphyrin
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009286
A class of heterocyclic macrocyclic organic compounds characterized by a large ring system composed of four modified pyrrole subunits interconnected by methine bridges. These compounds are highly colored and can chelate metal ions, forming metalloporphyrins. Heme, the prosthetic group in hemoglobin and myoglobin, is an iron-containing porphyrin derivative.
A group of organic compounds featuring a macrocyclic ring structure formed by four pyrrole rings linked by methine bridges. These molecules are known for their intense color and ability to bind metal ions within their central cavity, creating metalloporphyrins. They are precursors to many biologically active molecules, such as chlorophyll and heme, which contains an iron atom.
