Tetrapyrroles

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013649

A class of chemical compounds containing a core structure of four pyrrole rings, which are five-membered aromatic heterocycles containing one nitrogen atom. These rings are joined together either in a linear arrangement by methine bridges (=CH−) or in a cyclic structure, forming a macrocycle. Porphyrins, such as the heme group in hemoglobin, are macrocyclic tetrapyrroles, while bile pigments like bilirubin are examples of linear tetrapyrroles.
