Fulvalenes

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004701

Hydrocarbons made of two rings joined by a carbon-carbon double bond that is exocyclic to both, the parent being fulvalene, C10H8, with two five-membered rings, together with substituted and heteroatom analogues named by prefixing the ring sizes, as in heptafulvalene. They are cross-conjugated rather than aromatic. Tetrathiafulvalene, in which sulfur replaces ring carbons, is a classic electron donor in organic conductors.
