Bilirubin
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001218
A yellowish pigment produced during the normal breakdown of heme, a component of red blood cells. It is transported to the liver, conjugated, and then excreted in bile. Elevated levels of unconjugated bilirubin in the blood can indicate liver dysfunction or excessive red blood cell destruction, leading to jaundice.
