Enterohepatic circulation
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003950
The process by which substances secreted in bile into the intestine are reabsorbed by the intestinal cells and returned to the liver via the portal vein. This circulatory pathway allows for the recycling of bile acids, bilirubin, and certain drugs, extending their half-life in the body. Approximately 95% of bile acids are reabsorbed and recirculated in this manner.
