Enterotoxin
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003951
A protein toxin produced by certain microorganisms that acts specifically on the cells of the intestinal mucosa. These toxins typically cause fluid and electrolyte secretion into the intestinal lumen, leading to diarrhea and vomiting. Examples include cholera toxin produced by Vibrio cholerae and heat-labile enterotoxin from Escherichia coli.
