Methemoglobin-forming substance
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007276
A chemical compound that, upon exposure or metabolism, induces the oxidation of the ferrous iron in hemoglobin to its ferric state, forming methemoglobin. Examples include nitrites, aniline derivatives, and certain drugs. Exposure to these substances can lead to methemoglobinemia, impairing oxygen transport in the blood.
