Oxidation state

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008392

A number assigned to an atom in a compound that represents its hypothetical charge if all bonds were ionic. It indicates the extent of oxidation (loss of electrons) or reduction (gain of electrons) of an atom. For example, in water (H2O), oxygen has an oxidation state of -2, and hydrogen has +1.
