Ion
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006069
An atom or molecule that has acquired a net electrical charge due to the loss or gain of one or more electrons. Cations are positively charged ions formed by losing electrons, while anions are negatively charged ions formed by gaining electrons. Ions are present in solutions, plasmas, and ionic solids, and their charge is typically an integer multiple of the elementary charge.
