Negative ion
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007804
An atom or molecule that has acquired a net negative electric charge by gaining one or more electrons. Also known as an anion, it is attracted to positively charged electrodes (anodes) during electrolysis. The magnitude of its charge is an integer multiple of the elementary charge, such as Cl⁻ (chloride ion) or SO₄²⁻ (sulfate ion).
