Ionization
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006119
The process by which an atom, molecule, or group of atoms acquires a net electrical charge, either positive or negative. This occurs through the gain or loss of electrons, or by the dissociation of a neutral molecule into charged fragments. The energy required to remove an electron from a neutral atom in its ground state is known as the ionization energy.
