Ionization

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-014951

1. The process by which a neutral atom loses or gains electrons, thereby acquiring a net charge and becoming an ion.

2. (EYE-on-uh-ZAY-shun) The splitting or dissociation (separation) of molecules into negatively and positively charged ions.

3. The process whereby a neutral atom or molecule becomes negatively or positively charged by acquiring or losing an electron.

4. The process where atoms or molecules are converted into electrically charged particles called ions through the gain or loss of electrons. High temperatures, electrical discharges, or nuclear radiation can cause ionization.

5. Process of adding one or more electrons to, or removing one or more electrons from, atoms or molecules, thereby creating ions. High temperatures, electrical discharges, or nuclear radiation can cause ionization.
