Oxidation number

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008391

A number assigned to an atom in a molecule or ion that represents the hypothetical charge it would have if all bonds were ionic. It is determined by a set of rules that prioritize electronegativity differences between bonded atoms. The sum of oxidation numbers for all atoms in a neutral compound is zero, and for an ion, it equals the charge of the ion.
