Central atom
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012959
An atom within a coordination entity that binds a group of other atoms or groups of atoms, known as ligands. The central atom functions as a Lewis acid by accepting electron pairs from the surrounding Lewis base ligands to form coordinate bonds. The number of donor atoms directly attached to the central atom is its coordination number, which ranges from 2 to as high as 16.
