Lewis formula
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006550
A two-dimensional diagram that depicts the valence electrons in a molecule, showing how atoms are connected through covalent bonds. In these representations, lines between atomic symbols indicate shared electron pairs (bonds), while dots placed around atoms represent non-bonding valence electrons, or lone pairs. The construction of a Lewis formula for main-group elements is guided by the octet rule, which states that atoms tend to bond in such a way that they each have eight electrons in their valence shell.
