Structure diagram
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011498
A two-dimensional graphical representation of the internal structure of a chemical species that depicts the arrangement of atoms and the chemical bonds connecting them. These diagrams can range from simple Lewis structures, which show valence electrons and formal charges, to more complex representations like skeletal formulas that omit hydrogen atoms attached to carbons for clarity. Unlike a chemical formula, which only indicates the number of atoms of each element, a structure diagram illustrates the specific connectivity and, in some formats, the stereochemistry of the molecule.
