Structure-activity relationship
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011499
The correlation between the chemical structure of a substance and its biological or toxicological activity. By systematically modifying parts of a molecule, such as functional groups or stereochemical centers, chemists can observe corresponding changes in its effects, like binding affinity to a receptor or metabolic rate. This analysis is foundational to medicinal chemistry for designing more potent and selective drugs and to toxicology for predicting the hazards of new chemicals based on their molecular features.
