Linear free energy relationship

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006622

A correlation that relates the logarithm of a rate or equilibrium constant for one series of reactions to the logarithm of a corresponding constant for another series of reactions, or to a substituent constant. These relationships are based on the assumption that changes in free energy for a reaction are linearly related to changes in the free energy of activation or equilibrium for a related process. The Hammett equation is a well-known example, correlating reaction rates with electronic properties of substituents.
