Compensation

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002303

A linear relationship observed between the logarithm of the pre-exponential factor and the activation energy for a series of related catalytic reactions or for a single reaction under varying conditions. This phenomenon, also known as the kinetic compensation effect, implies that changes in the activation energy are offset by corresponding changes in the pre-exponential factor. The relationship is expressed by the equation ln(A) = aEₐ + b, where A is the pre-exponential factor and Eₐ is the activation energy.
