Iron-sulfur proteins
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006152
A class of proteins whose redox centres are non-haem iron atoms held by cysteine sulfur, usually together with inorganic sulfide, as in Fe2S2 and Fe4S4 clusters and the single-iron rubredoxin site. Most act as electron carriers in respiration and photosynthesis, while some catalyse reactions or regulate activity. The complex members add a second kind of active group, for instance a flavin, a molybdenum site or a haem.
