Catalytic hydrodesulfurization
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001726
A catalytic process for removing sulfur from petroleum fractions by reacting them with hydrogen. In this process, organosulfur compounds are converted into hydrogen sulfide and the corresponding hydrocarbon over a solid catalyst, typically containing molybdenum and cobalt or nickel on an alumina support. The resulting hydrogen sulfide is then separated and converted to elemental sulfur, a process mandated by environmental regulations to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions.
