Iridoids

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013214

A class of monoterpenoids characterized by a cyclopentanopyran skeleton, which is derived from the cyclization of geraniol. These compounds are widespread in many plant families and serve as defensive agents against herbivores or pathogens. The basic iridoid structure is based on the iridomyrmecin or isoiridomyrmecin skeletons, first isolated from ants of the genus Iridomyrmex.
