Sterols

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011405

A class of steroids that contain a hydroxyl group at the C-3 position of the A-ring and a branched aliphatic side chain of at least eight carbon atoms at the C-17 position. They are derived from the cyclization of squalene and are found in plants, animals, and fungi. Cholesterol is a well-known animal sterol, while ergosterol is found in fungi and sitosterol is a common plant sterol.
