Phthalides

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008946

Lactones derived from 2-(hydroxymethyl)benzoic acid and its derivatives, characterized by a fused benzene ring and a five-membered lactone ring. The parent compound is 1(3H)-isobenzofuranone, which serves as the fundamental bicyclic structure from which all other phthalides are named and derived through substitution. Many phthalides are naturally occurring compounds found in plants and fungi, exhibiting a range of biological activities.
