Penams
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008591
A class of bicyclic organic compounds characterized by a fused beta-lactam ring and a five-membered thiazolidine ring. The core structure consists of a four-membered nitrogen-containing ring fused to a sulfur-containing five-membered ring. This ring system is the fundamental structural unit of penicillin antibiotics, which exert their antibacterial effect by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis.
