Penicillins
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008597
A group of β-lactam antibiotics derived from the fungus Penicillium, characterized by a penam core structure with a variable side chain. They inhibit bacterial cell wall synthesis by interfering with peptidoglycan cross-linking enzymes. Penicillins are widely used to treat bacterial infections, though resistance has emerged.
