Penning excitation
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008598
An energy transfer process where an excited metastable atom or molecule transfers its excitation energy to another atom or molecule upon collision, leading to ionization of the latter. This occurs when the excitation energy of the metastable species is greater than the ionization energy of the collision partner. It is a fundamental process in Penning ionization mass spectrometry.
