Penning ionization

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008601

A process where an excited neutral atom or molecule, typically in a metastable state, collides with another neutral atom or molecule, resulting in the ionization of the second species. The excited species transfers its internal energy to the collision partner, which then ejects an electron. This phenomenon is exploited in certain ionization sources for mass spectrometry.
