Penning gas mixture
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008599
A mixture of gases, typically a noble gas with a small amount of an easily ionizable gas, designed to enhance ionization efficiency in gas discharge devices. The metastable excited states of the noble gas transfer energy to the second gas, leading to its ionization. A common example is neon with a small percentage of argon, used in some gas-filled detectors.
