Direct analysis in real time
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003248
An ambient ionization technique for mass spectrometry that allows for the direct analysis of samples in their native state with minimal preparation. A stream of heated, metastable gas, such as helium or nitrogen, is directed at the sample surface, causing desorption and ionization of surface molecules. This method is distinct from plasma-assisted desorption ionization mass spectrometry, which uses a dielectric barrier discharge plasma for ionization.
