Ipso-attack
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006151
The attack of a reagent at a ring carbon of an aromatic compound that already bears a substituent other than hydrogen, the ipso position. The result can be replacement of that substituent, called ipso substitution, or the attacking group can add and later migrate to another position. Groups that leave readily as cations, such as trimethylsilyl and tert-butyl, are especially prone to ipso substitution.
