Ion-to-photon detector
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006150
A detector in which incoming ions hit a conversion dynode and knock out secondary electrons, which are accelerated onto a phosphor screen, and the light flashes from the phosphor are registered by a photomultiplier tube. The photomultiplier sits outside the ion path, so it is not struck by ions or neutral particles directly. The Daly detector used in mass spectrometry is an example of this design.
