Flame photometric detector

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004469

A selective detector used in gas chromatography for compounds containing sulfur or phosphorus. The effluent from the gas chromatograph is introduced into a hydrogen-rich flame, causing these elements to emit light at characteristic wavelengths. A photomultiplier tube measures the intensity of this emitted light, typically at 394 nm for sulfur and 526 nm for phosphorus.
