Eluent

The mobile phase solvent or mixture of solvents used to carry the sample components through a chromatographic column. It is chosen based on its ability to selectively interact with the stationary phase and the analytes, facilitating their separation. The composition of the eluent can be constant (isocratic) or varied over time (gradient).
