Stepwise elution
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011361
A mode of chromatography in which the eluent is switched, one or more times, from one fixed composition to a stronger one during a single run, so the mobile phase changes in abrupt stages instead of smoothly. It suits mixtures whose components differ greatly in how strongly the stationary phase holds them, because weakly held species leave first and the stronger eluent then drives off those held tightly. Gradient elution, in contrast, alters the eluent continuously.
