Secondary electron multiplier
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013531
A detector used in mass spectrometry and other instruments to amplify a small ion current into a measurable electrical signal. It consists of a series of dynodes held at successively higher positive potentials. When an ion strikes the first dynode, it causes the emission of multiple secondary electrons, which are then accelerated to the next dynode, creating a cascading amplification effect.
