Microchannel plate
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007311
A device composed of a thin wafer of glass containing a dense array of microscopic channels, each acting as an independent electron multiplier. When an electron enters a channel, it strikes the wall, releasing secondary electrons that are then accelerated down the channel by an applied electric field, leading to an avalanche effect. This device is commonly used in mass spectrometry as a detector for ions or electrons, providing high gain and fast response times.
