Cine-substitution

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002077

A substitution in which the incoming group ends up on the atom next to the one that held the leaving group, not on that atom itself. Aromatic examples typically go through an aryne: a strong base removes HX from an aryl halide to give benzyne, and the nucleophile then adds to one end of the strained triple bond. In ipso substitution, by contrast, the entering group takes the exact position the leaving group vacated.
