Aryne

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000826

A highly reactive, neutral intermediate derived from an aromatic compound by the formal removal of two ortho-hydrogen atoms, resulting in an additional triple bond within the aromatic ring. The most common example is benzyne, derived from benzene. Arynes are characterized by their extreme electrophilicity and short lifetimes.
