Swain-Scott equation
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011709
A linear free-energy relationship that correlates the rates of nucleophilic substitution reactions with the nucleophilicity of the attacking reagent and the electrophilicity of the substrate. It uses empirical parameters to quantify the sensitivity of a substrate to nucleophilic attack and the inherent reactivity of a nucleophile. This equation is often applied to reactions in aqueous solution, such as hydrolysis.
