Benzenium ions

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012920

Carbocations formed by the electrophilic attack on a benzene ring, resulting in a positively charged, delocalized system. They are characterized by a sp3 hybridized carbon atom within the ring, which bears the attacking electrophile and a hydrogen atom, while the positive charge is delocalized over the remaining five carbon atoms. These arenium ions are key intermediates in electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions.
