Phenonium ions

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008758

Carbocations in which a phenyl group participates in stabilizing the positive charge through intramolecular electrophilic aromatic substitution, forming a bridged cyclic structure. These ions are typically observed as intermediates in solvolysis reactions of certain arylalkyl compounds. The bridging phenyl group can lead to rearrangements and specific stereochemical outcomes.
