Solvolysis

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011036

A type of nucleophilic substitution or elimination reaction where the solvent molecule acts as the nucleophile or base, leading to the cleavage of a bond in the substrate. The specific name of the reaction depends on the solvent used; for example, hydrolysis uses water, and alcoholysis uses an alcohol. These reactions are often unimolecular (SN1 or E1) and proceed through carbocation intermediates.
