Lyonium ion
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006849
The cation formed by the protonation of a solvent molecule, resulting from the solvent's autoprotolysis. This species is the strongest acid that can exist in that specific solvent. The hydronium ion (H₃O⁺) is the lyonium ion in water, while the corresponding ion in methanol is the methyloxonium ion (CH₃OH₂⁺).
