Oxonium ions
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008405
Cations containing a trivalent oxygen atom that bears a positive formal charge, with the general formula R3O+. These ions are formed by the protonation or alkylation of ethers, alcohols, or water. The simplest example is the hydronium ion, H3O+, which is formed by the protonation of water and is a fundamental species in aqueous acid-base chemistry.
