Onium compounds

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008240

Cations formed by the formal addition of a proton or an organic group to a neutral parent hydride, resulting in a positively charged species with a central atom bearing a formal positive charge. These compounds are characterized by a central atom that has one more bond than its typical valence, often nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur, or phosphorus. Examples include ammonium (NH4+) and sulfonium (R3S+) ions.
