Nitrilium ions
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007960
Cations characterized by a nitrogen atom triply bonded to a carbon atom, with a positive charge formally located on the nitrogen. These species are electrophilic and highly reactive intermediates in organic reactions. Nitrilium ions are often formed by the protonation of nitriles or by the reaction of nitriles with electrophiles, participating in reactions such as the Ritter reaction.
