A transformation in which a substrate is converted into a larger molecular entity by forming exactly one two-center bond to another entity, with no other change in the substrate's connectivity. An example is carbon monoxide combining with a carbenium ion R+ to give the acylium ion RCO+. It differs from addition, in which a reagent forms two new bonds to an unsaturated substrate.
