The process by which a free electron or a small, mobile ion joins with a neutral atom or molecule to create a negative ion. This phenomenon reduces the number of free charge carriers in the atmosphere, thereby decreasing its electrical conductivity. In the lower atmosphere, oxygen molecules (O2) are the primary species to which electrons attach, forming negative oxygen ions.
