Ion mean life

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006641

The average time an ion exists in a particular atmospheric layer before it is removed by recombination with an electron or an ion of opposite charge, or by attachment to a neutral molecule. This parameter is influenced by factors such as ion density, electron density, and the composition of neutral gases. The ion mean life is a fundamental quantity in ionospheric chemistry and dynamics.
